Scotland is full of castles. Some of them are old, some are young, big or small – every one of them deserves attention. While staying in Scotland, one definitely shouldn’t miss any opportunity to visit some of local magnificent fortresses. Below I’d like to present few of most beautiful Scottish castles.

This castle is widely recognized all over the world. First castle was built on this site in 13th century. After that it was rebuilt few times. Situated on the route to the Isle of Sky it can be easily reached by tourists. Destroyed partially in 18th century, the castle remained ruined for over 200 years. Scotland is widely known because of its beautiful lakes. Typical Scots call lake “loch”. In whole country there probably are over 31,460 freshwater lochs. Only about 350 are substantial, rest of them are rather small. Majority of lochs can be found in the northern and western part of Scotland.

If you want to take a lake tour, you should definitely head to Great Glen. It spreads from Inverness to Fort William. Largest loch situated in this area is famous Loch Ness, known for mythical “Nessie” – enormous monster living in its depths. It is believed, that Nessie may be descendant of dinosaurs… Well, if it exists, which is highly questionable. What’s for sure, is that Loch Ness is 39 km long and its deepest point is 230 m. This loch is also very popular among tourists. It is recommended to explore it by boat. You can rent one on the shores of the loch. In this area you can also enjoy walking, cycling and scenic sights.

Brave enough to face Nessie? Go to Drumnadrochit. It’s a little village in which you can see Loch Ness 2000 exhibition, rated as a 5 Star Visitor Attraction.
