The capital of Scotland since the mid 1400’s, Edinburgh is situated in the south-east of Scotland, close to the North Sea. Steeped in history, full of grandeur and with a vast array of culture, Edinburgh is the perfect location for people of all ages and interests.
Sighted as one of the most scenic and beautiful places in the whole of Europe, Edinburgh is home to over 4,500 grade listed buildings, many showing the fantastic Georgian architecture off superbly. These buildings range from small, historical venues in the main centre to great castles in the more rural areas, all adding to the fantastic Edinburgh charm.
Getting to Edinburgh is easy. Rail routes run daily from all major train stations the UK, as well as from a lot of smaller stations, making Edinburgh Waverley train station the one of the busiest in the whole of Scotland (second only to Glasgow Central). There is great access to the City from the UK’s motorway service and once in Edinburgh, there is a superb public bus network which extensively covers the majority of the City. Also home to Edinburgh Airport, millions of visitors to the City use this mode of transport, which is the reason it is regularly being expanded and upgraded.
Once in the City itself, there is so much to see and do it can often be difficult to decide what to do first. With a popular shopping district featuring everything from high street brands to quaint, one-off boutiques to the many historical sights that Edinburgh offers and onto the thriving nightlife that Edinburgh itself boasts about, there is a piece of this great City for everyone’s tastes.
Choosing where to stay in Edinburgh often poses a problem to many visitors – not because the quality of Hotels in Edinburgh are poor, or that there aren’t enough hotels to meet demand, but purely for the fact there are so many high quality accommodation types, many people don’t know where to start. A 5 star hotel in the centre of the City sounds perfect, but for some, a beautiful, chocolate box cottage on the City perimeter is idyllic. Maybe a holiday park or a family run bed and breakfast is preferred – wherever you’re looking to stay, Edinburgh certainly delivers.
One of the attractions that draws many to Edinburgh is the famous Edinburgh Festival. Made up of several, individual festivals that take place throughout the month of August every year, the most popular of these festivals being the Edinburgh Fringe festival. The largest arts and culture festival in the world, the Edinburgh Fringe is now renowned for its thriving comedy area. Showcasing talent that is both up and coming as well as fully established comedians, it is visited by many and well worth a seat if you’re visiting Edinburgh during August.
There is something going on all year round in Edinburgh, culminating in the ever popular New Year’s Eve Hogmanay, reputed to be the best New Year’s Eve celebrations in the world. Whenever you visit Edinburgh, regardless of the time of year, you’re guaranteed to have a fantastic time.
